Some relief for England ahead of the 4th Test is that India have opted to rest Bumrah.

Robinson and Bashir replace Wood and Ahmed in tomorow's 4th Test.

England ended up 302/7 at the end of day one in Ranchi on a decidedly tricky surface. They won the toss and wisely chose to bat first. At lunch they were 112/5 without having done all that much wrong.
Root and Foakes put on a partnership of 113 and then some more useful contributions from Hartley and Robinson proved crucial in boosting the team total and allowing Joe Root to reach a masterful century. 106 not out overnight.

Just need to try and get as many more early tomorrow as possible and set about trying to get a first innings advantage with the ball.

That pitch is an absolute mare.
Do not want to be batting last on that!!

Joe Root remembers the fundamentals of batting and?? - Hey presto! Who knew that the batting manual that has stood the test of time for 100 plus years, would still (occasionally) be the essential read for England's modern day kamikaze pilot players?? Joe Root has built a career as one of - (Not the overall - Gower, Gooch etc??) the greats of English batters, and showed why today! That is his role - stick to it!! A healthy total and platform, but - and yes the pitch is difficult - about time - India have, as we all know the capacity to go big, so more needed.

Terrible planning from England management, Leach left the tour through injury & no replacement. When asked at the time Stokes said that he hoped that the don't need to send for an extra spinner as it would mean that someone would be injured. Bashir has now gone home due to personal reasons & no talk of replacing him either. So easy in Asia to pick up an illness let alone an injury. Down to 2 fit spinners. One more goes down & they're will have to rely on Root again or Lawrence and his part time stuff.annoyed

You get a whole 5 days to get a result in a Test, so unless it's the flattest of wickets, there's no hurry. I see Root put the reverse scoop shot away, maybe played one reverse all day. Rooty could've had another 5 or 6 tons in the bazball era if he'd have played his own game, which happened to be one with a very decent strike rate. Williamson scored 3 tons in 2 Testa against South Africa, that is the model that Root should be looking at.

The last test is in Dharamshala which supposedly favours the seam bowlers rather more. So if the series is still live by then hopefully the quota of available England spinners will be enough.
But I agree with Boomer about the planning side of things. A bit haphazard to say the least. Not great really.
