^^ I think that some over dramatize situations that more than likely have a perfectly understandable explanation.
We don't know in the first place if babes for the morning or afternoon shifts were booked in the first place. If they were & someone has had a good reason to cancel then finding replacements at short notice will be nigh on impossible.
Regarding the morning shift, especially a Sunday morning, it would be common for someone to overindulge on a weekend especially, get carried away & have one or two drinks too many. Having to get up for a 5.30 start which will include travelling after a heavy night & in winter, raining outside it is easy to rationalize that some might be tempted to pull a sickie.

^^ It's what is called the reality of the situation, but I wouldn't expect you to understand.

Yeah, but professionalism is as professionalism does. If you agree to a 5.30 start time, then you either start then or you have a good reason not to. If it's short notice, you still expect some show even if starting a little late.

I still well recall back in the (admittedly halcyon) old days complimenting the way Fernanda might start on the Pad at half 5 as though nothing could have given her more joy than to start then, ready for an appreciative audience etc

That's exactly my point, we don't ever get to know if the employee has a good reason or not, that is between the two parties. To suggest either way is purely speculation.
Meanwhile back in the real world not everyone loves their job, but some are better than others at giving the impression that they do. Important
