On December 15th 1978 the first Laserdisc player,manufactured by Phillips went on sale in Atlanta,Georgia.The Magnavox 8000 cost $749 and the manufacturers were immediate besieged by customers complaining of technical issues.The first title on the system to be marketed in North America was Jaws.

In Mork and Mindy there was a character who would return as Mr Bickley called Mr Wanker-the US not realising that in this country that means something completely different. However, it wasn't edited out when shown on Channel 4-but also wasn't edited for a repeat.

German Inventor Paul Nipkow managed to achieve static black and white television transmission with his famous ‘Electric Telescope’ in 1884.

The Eiffel Tower was supposed to be scrapped after 20 years. It only survived because the military started using it as a radio tower, intercepting crucial military transmissions during WW1.
