Am finding all images posted through this site to be incredibly slow to load today. Everything else is working as normal so I don't think it's just me.

Is there a problem with the site? I keep getting the same error while trying to upload pics from my phone memory card.
Corrupt or empty file.

^ I have just used it successfully, sounds like it could be your files that are to blame.

^^ It was a browser issue, both my Opera apps give me an error but my Chrome app seems to work ok.

I've got loads of gallery folders on this site now and it's getting unwieldy with them all listed down the left hand side of the page (lots of scrolling).
If I move images from these galleries into a newly created gallery folder to consolidate them and reduce the total number of gallery folders - will this mean all the links in previous posts will all be broken ?

It should be ok - I often upload images, then post/hotlink them on the forum, then move them to a specific gallery afterwards. Those images always continue to display ok. Moving from one gallery to another shouldn't be any different.
Indeed I've just tried it with one of my caps, and it's fine.
