RE: Snooker - Snooks - 20-04-2020 23:21 Personally I was wondering where Willie Virgo, Cliff Charlton and Eddie Mountjoy had gone RE: Snooker - lovebabes56 - 21-04-2020 05:58 (19-04-2020 23:33 )snookered Wrote:I meant Alex - sorry guys!! I'd forgotten about that fluke I think he only picked up what was £18k for what he did at the time? I recall didn't the BBC miss one maximum break on time because they were on a lunch break or something? I think he probably was the first player of the modern era (!) game to win the world title at the first attempt and he did come through the qualifiers as well. You probably would be just as surprised with Bill Werberniuk having to drink - what was it - 16 pints of lager a match??? Great characters then. I know Cliff Thorburn was the first player overseas to win the title and still remember that they cut coverage for several minutes for the Iranian Embassy siege!! but he looked so bloody cool when he did that final black for the 147 and I still remember Clive Everton's last comment before he potted it "Good luck mate.." maximum in a TV tournament and I know there was a big thing in the papers about who was going to do the first televised maximum break in a tournament at thr time but Cliff's was thre first televised one at the World Championship what's the maximum break worth now, £50K? I think at the time also the maximum snooker break was worth the same as the 9 - dart finish wasn't it? I think the Premier League thing is probably as close as we'll get to having the old pot Black TV programme back on TV, that I think was the eye opener to snooker probably for many of us. How many players play left handed now? At the time I recall Eddie Charlton & Perrie were the only left handed players in snooker? I know Ronnie can play play both left or right handed RE: Snooker - HannahsPet - 21-04-2020 06:00 (19-04-2020 15:27 )snookered Wrote: I watched the Davis v Knowles match yesterday and kept thinking 'How is this a Crucible classic?'. Saw the end of the Davis-White '84 final yesterday. Because it's not shown as often as the '85 final, it was surprising and tense. Also the table looked pretty with all those chalk marks and finger marks everywhere RE: Snooker - Tractor boy - 21-04-2020 21:31 Neil Robertson, barry Hawkins, Jimmy White & Mark king are left handed players. RE: Snooker - Doddle - 24-04-2020 07:59 I enjoyed the White-Hendry thing from '88 yesterday, but couldn't help noticing John "Hendry worshipper" Virgo was already doing commentary back in those days! RE: Snooker - HannahsPet - 24-04-2020 15:15 ^^ yeah think he was coming to the end so when he was knokced out he would commentate had already been commentating for a few years before big break RE: Snooker - Doddle - 24-04-2020 21:19 "He's 200 points behind and needs 35 snookers - but for me, he's just gone favourite!" AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ahem as you were EuroSport are showing classic snooker in the evenings, but with viewers voting for their choices online. RE: Snooker - Snooks - 24-04-2020 21:23 The most enjoyable look back so far was the 1982 final between Reardon and Higgins. The semi between Higgins and White from the same year should have been shown too as that match was a classic for so many reasons. I tend to appreciate the look back at the early years more than the latter ones. |
