It's tragically ironic that Stockton Rush was as blaise about Safety as the owners of the Titanic who said it didn't need any lifeboats because it was " unsinkable "

That isn't a fair or accurate comment about the owners of the Titanic, who were hugely concerned about safety. The ship had extremely advanced safety features for the time, such as watertight compartments and remotely activated watertight doors, and it was totally compliant with international safety standards. As for lifeboats, the Titanic actually provided more lifeboat accommodation than was legally required (room for 1178 people rather than the required 990).

Stockton Rush on the other hand once told a reporter that 'at some point, safety is just pure waste'. He ignored many warnings about the safety and admitted not meeting various safety standards, but covered himself by getting passengers to sign a safety waiver. Interesting choice if name by the way, Oceangate, as ever since Watergate we've seen gate added to the end of words to indicate scandal or controversy. In the end perhaps the name was an apt choice.

This could turn out to be an oddly prophetic movie scene....the "leak" is somewhat stretched out to dramatise things but it's a reasonable stab at what might have happened to Titan.

RE: General News Thread - Tractor boy - 29-06-2023 00:21

The authorities have recovered the wreckage of the Titan with bodies on board so at least the families will be able to lay their loved ones to rest.

RE: General News Thread - Tumble_Drier - 29-06-2023 01:17

^"Presumed Human Remains" is the description of what they've found. If there's anything even closely resembling a body then it would be nothing short of a miracle.

Would they have been decompressed in any way in the implosion and I assume dental records would be the only possible way to positive ID's?

I was talking with a friend of mine and both us have said we would never want to visit that site in the way they did it would represent too much risk to us and even if a company with a submersible with a good safety record offered me the chance I feel that depth would be too risky for me and turn it down. We also felt the Titanic itself should be left alone as it is to preserve the memory of those who died in the Titanic disaster itself.

RE: General News Thread - Tumble_Drier - 29-06-2023 13:39

They'd be compressed not decompressed. Think of an old style bicycle pump and how they would heat up as you pumped up the bike tyre. Now imagine that at a pressure of around 6000psi (vs 50-100 for a bike tyre) all happening in less than 30 milliseconds with a resulting temperature of around 1300C.

I read somewhere that the pressure involved is roughly equivalent to having the Eiffel Tower dropped on you.... Surprised
