Met police saying the fire was caused by a hotpoint fridge freezer catching fire. watch hotpoint get blame now. proberly was the fridge but the residents had complained about power surges in the building so a surge proberly caused the fridge to catch fire which prob meant the insulation caught fire which the cladding made worse setting whole thing on fire. sounds like really bad luck

Outside of a lightning strike or a major grid fault it is very rare that a "surge" will cause sudden failure of an appliance. It's more likely that the back of the fridge was thick with shit & grease and that started the fire.

I had read reports that the bloke whose fridge it was that caught fire went to bed with it still burning

His neighbour said on TV that the tenant of the flat where the fire started was knocking on doors telling people to get out. He supposedly had a bag/suitcase with him at the time.
