Australia won by an innings and 123 runs. Sad how England not just lose, but get comprehensively thrashed.

Root failed to bat last night as he was i'll, or was he just hiding bladewave

Trevor Bayliss also went into hiding. It's time that he went.

He says he staying till September next year
So who is exactly responsible for this debacle? Boycott picked up on Farbrace's "planning" comment so wondering if he is responsible. To me the team that went out there looked pretty much the best we could offer and pretty much hoped we would give the Aussies a good game or two. But I think the whole Stokes affair probably overshadowed everything. Even if Stokes played, I think we would have lost one or two Tests by smaller margins.

He didn't fail to bat.

He retired ill and Moeen Ali came in, but on the fall of Ali's wicket Root came out to resume his innings, only to retire ill for a second time.

what do we make of squad for NZ tour?

can only assume Stokes will likely still be unavailable as I've not heard of any further progress on police investigation

England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and chose to field first against Australia in the first ODI. Alex Hales is down to bat at No 3 and both frontline spinners, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, have been chosen, alongside the fit again Mark Wood and the fit again Chris Woakes.

England team: Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Alex Hales, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Liam Plunkett, Mark Wood.

I guess it would be good for Root not to have captaincy duties to worry about and play his natural game
