RE: General News Thread - Charlemagne - 18-03-2025 11:02 The last surviving Battle of Britain pilot, Dubliner John "Paddy" Hemingway, has died at the age of 105. It's now an end of an era. RE: General News Thread - lovebabes56 - 21-03-2025 06:11 Our last link gone to what was the most famous aerial battle in history and a wonderful age. I sincerely hope he is honoured with full military honours given his significant part in history. "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many by so few" remarked Prime Minister Winston Churchill at the time. How right he was and we stlll owe our freedoms today to them too they were the bravest of the brave facing such incredible odds in defeating the might of the Luftwaffe. RE: General News Thread - Charlemagne - 24-03-2025 12:28 It's a bit hard to figure out what happened at Heathrow the other day. One of three substations which supply power to Heathrow set on fire and caused an outage to the airport. Because of this the airport closed initially for 24 hours but they restarted operations after 16 hours. Tens of thousands passengers were affected. The boss of Heathrow was informed about the incident before going back to bed. He later said that as there was no power Heathrow had to close. Now the boss of the National Grid has said that there was enough availablity of power in the other two substations and that the airport didn't need to close, but just delay the flights for a short time. The Heathrow boss has argued against this. As they are an independant company, Heathrow are going to have their own internal inquiry. This enquiry needs to be run by someone who is independant. RE: General News Thread - lovebabes56 - 24-03-2025 12:45 I wonder if there are people working at Heathrow who actually didn't agree with the decision to close, but one thing - if it is not suspcious (which police have said, and possibly rules out sabotage of any kind) could a overload on the local grid could have knocked it out? I doubt it could have been hacked in any way.
