They're not trying to stick two fingers up to anybody. Besides, the Beijing opening ceremony was very delicate and poetic in parts. But that's hardly surprising; the Chinese have got centuries of pre-Maoist cultural and artistic excellence to draw on. Maybe you tuned into an old recording of a Red Square procession four years ago by mistake? Canny of this year's opening ceremony organisers not to make too many references to the British Empire's blood-soaked colonial past though, and stick to showing a lot of prancing around to The Bee Gees and OMD instead...
