With Belgium completing the set, all 8 quarter-finalists are the teams that topped their respective groups. Yet it didn't seem like a foregone conclusion as at least two of them are very lucky to be there.

listening to talksport i think the praise for the USA has been a bit OTT. Belgium had almost 40 shots on goal and should have won easily in normal time, yes the USA tried to fight back in extra time but they were losing at that point anyway so had to

Like i said yesterday soccer is probably US' 5th sport, so i think there's every right to be OTT

I think the praise for the USA is well deserved. I thought they made a valiant effort and pushed Belgium all the way. Compare the respective teams and who the players play for at club level. All 23 of Belgium's players play in European leagues including 13 who appeared in the Premier League last season for Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea etc. Only 12 of the USA players are from European leagues, and then not from the biggest clubs, with players from Hertha Berlin, Nantes, Rosenborg, Besiktas and AZ Alkmaar etc. I thought it was a fantastic effort from the USA and fully deserving of any praise that comes their way.

Irrespective of whether the praise is deserved or not, I thought the match was thoroughly entertaining. I actually turned it on with the express expectation and intention of falling asleep within 10 minutes. I ended up watching the whole thing!

Belgium v USA has been my favourite match of the World Cup so far.

they made the last 16, not the semi final, they've made the last 16 a few times before and in 2002 they made the QF i think, they aren't as bad as people think, i wonder if we would have received this sort of praise if we played a team who on paper is better than us, we'd probably moan that we should have lost 2-0 or 3-0 in normal time like the yanks should have, italy didn't have over 30 shots at our goal did they?

i agree though the match last night was entertaining as Belgium created lots of chances in normal time and then the USA suddenly woke up in extra time,

just done more research and the USA beat spain in 2009 in the confederations cup and made the final

If you go by how many people play the game it's the USA's first sport.
