They would go around the town knocking on pub doors and entertain the landlord and regulars with song in hopes of being given a drink in their wassail bowls. Wassailing was also a way of blessing a tree(apple) so that it would be a good crop - toast was attached to its branches and cider sprinkled over the base to make it grow. Blessings to God towards the master of the house(were you a servant) would be attached to various parts of things such as cattle(for good yield of beef) and maize (for a good crop of corn) Epiphany tells the story of the Magi (Three Wise Men) arriving at the stable to worship the Lord. Now this is odd because if Jesus was born 12 days before that, yet all Nativity scenes depict the Three Wise Men already present.
