RE: Dr Who - ShandyHand - 08-09-2018 11:59 Chibs has said the doc's gender will not be referenced a great deal in the forthcoming storylines. To which one might say then why the need for change if it is not to be significant to the narrative? Of course, this would be why... ^ Airdate trailer as social commentary via visual methaphor. Subtle as a house brick through your (glass) window. Even Barry Letts would have baulked. Remember when trailers were for promoting characterisation, story locales and the visual splendor of a show? This series has achieved nothing until it succeeds with the public. Yet this promotion would have us believe it already deserves some sort of award! Just get on with selling the drama itself. As you can probably tell, this is getting on my tits a bit now... But then the beeb probably wishes I had them too. Matt Smith was interviewed on Larry King's show today. He wished Jodie well and would be happy to reappear on the show if asked. RE: Dr Who - ShandyHand - 08-09-2018 19:24 Thing is I thought women broke the glass ceiling by doing things for themselves. Not by standing on the shoulders of 12 blokes and a 50 year legacy. It all depends how you look at it. Isn't that like saying - women shouldn't aspire to be CEO of a 50 year old company with 12 previous male CEO's ? #justsaying Any woman (or man, for that matter) going into a top job is standing on the shoulders of those who went before. What matters is how they perform going forward. Spiderman is spiderman not spiderwoman wonder woman is wonderwoman not wonderman and a million other examples. Fans are unhappy the base line of the character has changed, but people who know shit about doctor who and i was alive when the first episode aired by the way are making out its some kind of gender bullshit. Its a character and its male and its male for a reason han solo is not a woman. Males are different to females thats why they are called females and we are called males ffs. You lot are on a sex forum and your supporting the future idiots wanting no sex as in one gender no dicks no pussies freakin no hole smooth robots ffs. RE: Dr Who - The Silent Majority - 08-09-2018 21:56 ^ You can throw as many toys out of your pram as you want. It won't change the fact that The Doctor is now female. The Master is also a timelord like the doctor and in modern doctor who she changed gender from male to female to be called Missy. So it has been established Timelords can change gender RE: Dr Who - ShandyHand - 09-09-2018 01:16 (08-09-2018 21:56 )The Silent Majority Wrote: ^ You can throw as many toys out of your pram as you want. If you care to look back at when the doc was announced I was always at most ambivalent on the idea. For me they have to pull this off with by regaining real good popularity for the show via the writing and performance if they want to justify messing with a long established character is what I've said. What grates with this one for me is not particularly a female doc, it is the beebs obvious reasons for pulling this move now - a complete effort to halt the decline in ratings and social construction, rather than an effort to simply make the best programme they can. The immense amount of virtue signalling going on since the announcement is also getting galling. We've seen very little of how good or bad a show they have made as yet. And as carrots has pointed out your CEO comment comes from a place that refuses to acknowledge the difference between the real world and this specific character that I was commenting on in my post. It's like making Bond female or Kirk just because you know reasons. (And yes I realise recent revisionist writing has tried to paint in a path to this move but its a little late is all.) I've actually said what they should do now is have 12 women in a row that at least would make something of the previous, now freshly lop-sided, narrative they have made. RE: Dr Who - The Silent Majority - 09-09-2018 05:55 The toys out the pram comment was aimed at carrots, who was clearly just having a sexist rant in reply to my post. And I may have misinterpreted your glass ceiling comment as being aimed at Jodie, since it's hard to see how the Doctor would be standing on his/her own shoulders RE: Dr Who - Doddle - 09-09-2018 06:47 (08-09-2018 19:24 )ShandyHand Wrote: Thing is I thought women broke the glass ceiling by doing things for themselves. No, she's not standing on the shoulders of giants any more than any of her predecessors were. I just think the arguments for the casting "well, he's an alien, so pfft" and "it means girls have a role model too" are pretty worthless. It's not about drama at all. Nobody in the classic series went "well, I'd ideally have cast a woman but I picked Colin Baker instead". |
