its been shown time and time again last season or so that the media dont know fuck all about footy

even if we dont win we would still be in playoffs and over a 2 game playoff i would give us a reasonable chance against any team that are in the playoffs.

I actually thought England had a chance of winning World Cup in 2010 with Capello in charge but then the press went all 1966 moralistic, got the FA to force Capello to drop Terry as captain due to his personal life issues and all the momentum of that qualifying campaign just disappeared like that

yeah but least we qualify Wink the majority of the time Wink

Iceland or Bosnia, definitely, Sweden or Croatia might be a bit more tricky but I really wouldn't fancy France or Portugal!

For those of you too young to remember it, the last game of the 1974 WCQ was similar in that England had to beat Poland to qualify. The difference was that Poland were still in contention and coming second meant elimination, not a play-off. It went down as one of the most infamous nights in England's football history.

This clip is from a "look back at 1973" programme shown on the Beeb a few years ago. There is a look at that year's FA Cup Final when 2nd Division Sunderland beat the mighty Leeds Utd and the England-Poland highlights start about 2m 15 in.

As with tonight, the game was only live on ITV but BBC showed highlights later in the evening and this is from their coverage:
