RE: Fascinating Facts and Trivia - GMach1 - 15-11-2018 19:10 You would have thought that after the first 50-100 if there was a creature in there it would be bloody annoyed at being bashed on the bonce by golf balls! Great stuff mate. The Irish get through 50 beer mats per person per year(doesn't say how much beer they get through-probably enough to fill Loch Ness ) Breathing the air in New Delhi is equivalent to smoking 45 cigarettes a day. The quinine in tonic water is effective against malaria, as long as you drink 300 gin and tonics! RE: Fascinating Facts and Trivia - GMach1 - 17-11-2018 21:26 In Hollywood if a film was really bad and the director didn't want to be associated with it, they used a different name - Alan Smithie-so if you see that name in a film as the director of it, you can bet that it is probably bad. RE: Fascinating Facts and Trivia - kelly1066 - 17-11-2018 21:33 On the subject of using pseudoyms..... Didn't Ronnie Barker write sketches under the name of 'Gerard Wylie'..? Yes, he did. (my dad got me into the two ronnies & morcambe & wise) I saw an interview with conductor, Andre Previn, who joked that people would call to him in the street still "Hello, Mr Preview!" as in what Eric had called him during an xmas special or M&W. RE: Fascinating Facts and Trivia - GMach1 - 17-11-2018 21:42 Yup he wrote the famous sketch Four Candles (Gerald Wiley) Your father had excellent taste Kelly1066. Yes he learnt his lines in the taxi coming from Los Angeles to London and they called him Andrew Preview, Mr Privet amongst others. It is still the FUNNIEST thing I have seen and I never get tired of watching it. On Youtube somewhere too. In another Christmas special he did a cameo role "I was a guest on the Morecambe and Wise show and look what happened to me" camera pulls out as he puts on a hat and presses the button on a bus and as it drives off he starts waving his baton as conductor. The story went (Barker) told Barry Cryer, one of the writers of the shows that he had invited Gerald to dinner and so they would get to meet him. Later they all assembled at a restaurant and waited for the mysterious Mr Wiley to appear. After a while Barker got up and announced that HE was Gerald Wiley! RE: Fascinating Facts and Trivia - Skyline - 18-11-2018 13:17 British people eat twice as many baked beans than any other European citizen. Five million sausages are eaten everyday in the UK. Due to the uncleanliness of the water at the time, babies in 14th century Herefordshire were baptised in cider. Scotland produces more than 250 million litres of whiskey every year which is enough to fill 4,546 average size swimming pools. Winchester was the first capital of England from 827 to 1066, the capital was transferred to Westminster, London after the Norman invasion that year. RE: Fascinating Facts and Trivia - GMach1 - 18-11-2018 17:52 I don't know if you remember the old Birds Eye Beefburgers advertisements with that kid who was always miserable(well it were grim oop north where he were from ) and he had a girlfriend. Anyway it turned out this actor didn't like the beefburgers and used to spit them out after filming. On that same subject the impressionist/voice man Mel Blanc, when playing Bugs Bunny used to eat a carrot and then spit it out because he didn't like carrots. And in another tenuous link Mel Blanc got his big break being the car that belonged to old time comedian Jack Benny. RE: Fascinating Facts and Trivia - GMach1 - 19-11-2018 20:42 Did you know that these people were accomplished musicians: PIANO: Eric Morecambe Myleene Klass Les Dawson the late Tara Palmer-Tompkinson & Sir Bruce Forsyth Jim Bowen(Bullseye) TRUMPET Roy Castle(Record Breakers) just about any instrument and the kitchen sink(literally) American actor and now jazz pianist Jeff Goldblum Jamie Oliver-Drums RE: Fascinating Facts and Trivia - rpj316 - 20-11-2018 13:59 Al Capone used to hand out business cards saying that he was a dealer in second hand furniture. I'll bet his specialty was drinks cabinets? RE: Fascinating Facts and Trivia - GMach1 - 20-11-2018 20:18 Speaking of good old Al - Al Capone fought to have expiration, or “sell by,” dates put on milk bottles, supposedly after one of his relatives became sick from drinking milk that had expired.
