I was told by someone who works for a certain government dept, that they play this kind of music on purpose, as many people will hang up out of frustration of the endless drone, then they have less claims to have to deal with.

I used to work for the DWP in their Pension Credit department, nearly 15 years ago now and can confirm the intentional playing of muzak down the phone line.

^^^I nearly put that "if you think the people on the phone are bad, wait until you meet the people in person"... Surprised

Some of them aren't scum, I think that's the safest way of putting it, depending on forum policies on swearing annoyed

Some of them can be jobsworths; there to instigate trouble & get people to kick off so they can stop their benefits. I wonder if they get a bonus for doing this & saving the gov't money?

You’re right. Why do you think I couldn’t stick working there for more than a few months. The hellhole I endured was the Pension Credit department and of course obviously all cases involved pensioners. Call it my upbringing, or just plain decency, but I was raised to treat the older generation with the respect that they deserve.

Many of the people who were in that DWP office were absolute bastards, real scum, no compassion for older people who were genuinely struggling to get by on the pittance they were on.

Those automatons who I had the misfortune to share the same space with, didn’t display the slightest trace of kindness, or even plain honest to goodness courtesy towards a fellow human being.

I just got sick of the cold hearted, mean spirited rule sticklers that infested the whole sodding mess of a place .. The day I left was the first and last time I had left a job because I was so damn sick of being amongst some of the worst apologies for humanity going.

A few years back i had the misfortune to be made redundant and was amongst a group of people sent to attend a sort of induction course. The guy taking it seemed a decent sort and told us a few things that might help us out including

Although not official policy benefit advisors were expected to sanction people especially those who had been employed for a long time and did not know how to play the system (easy targets)

If every job centre in the country managed to stop just one persons benefit each week it would save the government approximately three million pounds a year, and as he said " do you think we only stop one persons benefits a week?"

Staff do not receive bonuses for sanctioning benefits but they do receive "kudos" and are looked upon favourably for doing so.

You can be sanctioned for the slightest thing including non positive body language ( something i almost fell victim to myself)

Most of the people i dealt with were pretty helpful but there was one who seemed to take pleasure in being a total bitch.

One of the few days it's been good being a '3' customer... poor reception for the most part, but always some reception. Can't recall it ever failing me at the wrong time. Shy
