Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a bit of a prankster and once sent a letter to five friends as a joke saying "we are discovered, flee immediately!" One of them took it seriously and vanished!

The only real lake in the Lake District(loads of meres, waters etc) is Bassenthwaite Lake.

Nat Burton wrote the famous song 'White Cliffs of Dover' as made famous by forces sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn BUT he had never been to Dover, never seen Dover and the 'bluebirds' mentioned weren't native to this country but North America. Bluebirds featured in Over the Rainbow and Zip-per-de doo dah(from Disney's Song of the South which mixed animation and live-action)
