Converting/Compressing VOB/DVD Files - Gold Plated Pension - 25-04-2010 05:22

I record the majority of programmes onto either a DVD or Harddrive and then transfer the contents onto my computer whoch come up as VOB files. These files are usually stored at 0.99 GB per 30 minutes of recording from a 4.7GB DVD+RW disc.
I have used several programmes for converting the content into either WMV or AVI files but find that the video content runs very fast and out of sync with the audio which either runs fast as well or at normal speed or cuts out half way through the conversion.
I'm sure i have seen this problem identified on this forum before but for the like of me cannot locate it.
I have used Any Video Converrter, MPEGSTREAMCLIP.

What is the easiest and most reliable software to use and which file format gives the best picture quality.

I have a Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista Premium.

Thanking you in advance.

There's various free apps - avidemux (not simple in my opinion or maybe I just don't like the interface), Mpegstreamclip (farily simple), VirtualDub (never used so not sure).

The simplest & most user-friendly one I've used is a paid for one - iSkySoft's Video Converter.

Quicktime Pro (paid for) also allows you to export to different formats - I've always found it slow.

There's also some other threads in this section with other recommendations.

Well I use VirtualDub for just about all my conversions. But VLC has a built in converter, if you want to try that. It's not as good as VirtulDub, but it's not bad for a quick conversion. Works pretty good on FLV's as well.

I use Avidemux http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/
but have used Handbrake in the past
http://handbrake.fr/
both are free.

Of the non free ones, Total Video Converter is very good

I'm looking for a video converter that'll convert .flv to .wmv. I've tried Super© but I keep getting an error code and, to be honest, I find all the options a bit intimidating. Any suggestions for nice simple free convertor would be appreciated.
