RE: BEST EVER WORLD CUP XI - mas0887 - 10-06-2010 22:48 This was vote put to a vote for Yahoo! and Eurosport users on the net, including Wildcard, Manager and Stadium, here it is: Stadium: Wembley (1966) Goalkeeper: Lev Yashin (USSR) Right-back: Cafu (Brazil) Centre-back: Bobby Moore (England) Sweeper: Franz Beckenbauer (West Germany) Left-back: Roberto Carlos (Brazil) Right midfield: Garrincha (Brazil) Left midfield: Johan Cruyff (Holland) Central midfield: Bobby Charlton (England) Number 10: Zinedine Zidane (France) Second striker: Pele (Brazil) Striker: Ronaldo (Brazil) Wild card: Roger Milla (Cameroon) Manager: Guus Hiddink (Netherlands, South Korea, Australia) And I don't think Zidane is 'easily' in the top 3 players of all time. Pele and Maradona are 1 and 2 obviously, and it is down to personal preference who is one or two for you out of those two but after that there are loads of players that could be 3rd, my vote goes to Cruyff or Garrincha. RE: BEST EVER WORLD CUP XI - groundnpound - 11-06-2010 06:44 1.Campos 2.Cafu 3.R.Carlos 4.M.Sammer 5.F.Cannavaro 6.P.Gascgoine 7.Z.Zidane 8.Rivaldo 9.Ronaldo 10.Maradona 11.Romario Based on players ive seen from Italia 90 onwards. Watch any of his clips on youtube then tell me that youre not impressed by what you have seen. Oh and he didnt have to resort to drug taking like maradona who while he may have been a great footballer will always remain a flawed genius because of the drug taking and drug bans anyone who has to resort to such activities for me will always be tainted. RE: BEST EVER WORLD CUP XI - Regenerated - 11-06-2010 11:28 Great idea for a thread. OK here's my all time eleven from all World Cups, I've even included squad numbers and World Cups appeared in:- 1 - Goalkeeper - Lev Yashin (USSR) World Cups:- 1958, 1962, 1966 Wideley established as the best ever to play between the sticks, the big Russian was one of the pioneers of "sweeping goalkeeping". In his day, the emphasis was on catching rather than punching - and he did it better than anyone. Athletic, composed and a leader on the field. 2 - Right back - Cafu (Brazil) World Cups:- 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006 Known for his speed up and down the flank, and for captaining the Brazil team at three World Cup finals. His presence in the team helped Brazil to dominate the tournament in the 1990s and 2000s. 3 - Left back - Paolo Maldini (Italy) World Cups:- 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002 Winner of 126 caps for Italy over a period of 14 years, from 1988 to 2002, Maldini deserved to lift the famous trophy, but unfortunately was never able to do so. Spent his entire playing career (25 seasons) playing for one club - AC Milan. 4 - Center back - Bobby Moore (England) World Cups:- 1962, 1966, 1970 Was holder of the record number of caps for an outfield England player (108) until the record was broken in 2009 by David Beckham. A gifted defender, Moore was able to read the game so well. His leadership helped propel England to glory in 1966. Pele called him the greatest defender he'd ever played against... 5 - Center back - Berti Vogts (Germany) World Cups:- 1970, 1974, 1978 A tenacious and gritty defender who specialised in man-marking. He played an excellent match against Holland in the 1974 World Cup final, proving an immovable wall that the Dutch could not get around. 6 - Central holding midfielder - Jozsef Bozsik (Hungary) World Cups:- 1954, 1958 A tough tackling, gifted passer and leader of the legendary Hungary team that reached the final in 1954. His role was to sit deep as the equivalent of today's holding player, break up the play and make the passes to start his team's attack. 7 - Right winger - Jairzinho (Brazil) World Cups:- 1966, 1970, 1974 The magic man of the golden Brazil team of 1970. Jairzinho is one of only 3 players to have scored in every round of a World Cup tournament. He made things happen, and when he was on his game, Brazil were unstoppable. 8 - Central midfielder / sweeper - Franz Beckenbauer (Germany) World Cups:- 1966, 1970, 1974 One of the most decorated and talented players ever, Beckenbauer captained West Germany through three tournaments and won 103 caps for his country over a period of 12 years. His sweeping runs from defence through midifield caused havoc. 9 - Center forward - Pele (Brazil) World Cups:- 1958, 1962, 1966, 1970 The best player ever to put on a pair of football boots. Quite simply, he is the embodiment of greatest footballer. The only member of this eleven to have won three World Cups. 10 - Center forward - Gary Lineker (England) World Cups:- 1986, 1990 Prolific goal-machine of England's 1980s and 1990s World Cup teams - Gary was the golden boot winner in 1986 and was vital to England's dreams of glory in 1990. Also admired for his fair play record and is the second highest goalscorer of England's team ever. 11 - Left winger / forward - Johan Cruyff (Holland) World Cups:- 1974 Was able to bamboozle defenders with his skill on the ball. Shone as one of the stars of the 1974 finals as Holland reached the first of their two finals, and scored the goal that put out defending champions Brazil in that same tournament. But he didnt really shine in the World Cup finals, and only played in one tournament - 1990, but didnt score. Injuries limited his career time after that, shame he couldnt ever have had an outstanding world cup.
