RE: Beware phone call scam - Forum Style - 15-08-2011 22:27 Many thanks to those who offered advice & positivity. Quick update: my friend's PC is fixed and restored back to normal. I've changed a lot of her passwords/login, changed her email address, replaced the McAfee with Kaspersky, anti-malware software installed and it's all running smoothly. I'm also helping her to understand the basics of her PC and get her programs setup the way she wants them. She emailed me earlier bragging that she'll know more than I do soon, which is great to hear 'cos getting scammed (on top of everything else) really ruined her confidence. No news yet on hunting down the scammers. To be honest, this sort of thing happens so often that I don't hold out much hope of her getting the money back. But I think we can chalk this one up for the "good guys", so thanks again. RE: Beware phone call scam - bigguy01 - 16-08-2011 17:12 fs thats good news. she should change her passwords regularly using numbers and letters. makes sure all the anti stuff software is regularly updated, some bring out a version every year which has new codes against the latest viruses. RE: Beware phone call scam - aceman65 - 17-08-2011 18:23 I've had this type of scam hitting me for over 12 months now. It started off with a call saying they were from microsoft's computer maintenence dept, and it was in responce to a report I had submitted. Of course I new right from the off it was a scam, as I asked how they got my name and telephone number from a report that doesn't include that information. Needless to say they hung up. But they still call me up on a regular basis, and try again. Although they seem to be calling themselves by different names each time. I contacted BT (my supplier) about it, and they said they were well aware of this scam, as it had been reported by quite a lot of customers. Unfortunately, they said they could not block the company from calling, as it was an international call, and had call blocking in place. Although going by the Indian accent they use, it's a good bet that it originates from either India or Pakistan. So my advise is to treat all calls of this nature as scams. And Forum Sty_e, you may want to get your friend to change the routers encryption code every now and again. That would prevent any access from an outside source. All the best Ace. RE: Beware phone call scam - go4it01 - 13-10-2011 16:07 hi,, i got a phone call this morning saying that there is a virus on my computer thats slowing my internet access down, it does run slow every now and then but i put up with it, (sometimes when i click on a link nothing happens, it doesnt freeze i can still move the cursor but it takes a few clicks for it to work) he had an idian accent so naturally i could barely understand him. im with aol and ive heard that there help centre are based in india so this could be legit. i told him i had norton which i run regulary and all that finds is a few cookies and thats it, he said norton doesnt always detect viruses and that he was going to direct me to a website and run me through what i had to do 2 speed my internet up which to me sounded dodgy so i said i was busy and to ring back later, he's going to ring back at 5.30 so i was just wondering if this sounds right or is it a scam ? the number wasnt witheld so it could be legit ? thw number is 00 91 20 30262784. what should i do ? thanx RE: Beware phone call scam - skateguy - 13-10-2011 16:16 (13-10-2011 16:07 )go4it01 Wrote: i was just wondering if this sounds right or is it a scam ? the number wasnt witheld so it could be legit ? thw number is 00 91 20 30262784. what should i do ? thanx Scam.
