George Martin is an excellent writer and he creates a world with a huge cast of characters involved in very complex and brutal geopolitical/sexual intrigue and he is careful not to overplay the fantasy elements.
I'd highly recommend them.
ive read the books and really enjoyed them and would say that you need to watch Game Of Thrones it is very good and the actors capture the characters very well

So far I think this is an exellent series and nicely fills a gap in the programming as most of the decent series are coming to an end.
