Indeed, another of the great shows that us wrinklies grew up with.
It's hard to believe that the role was originally intended for Bing Crosby (that's true)....could you imagine Columbo saying "just one more thing"....and breaking into a chorus of...."I'm dreaming of a white xmas....."

he wore the same suit and coat in every columbo show. he did his research in being a homicide detective and thats what he learnt was that the homicide unit wear the same suit and coat has they work long hours only changing their underwear, socks, shirts, tie. 4emmy's as columbo and 2 academt nominations in 1960 and 1961.

I'm not wanting to get into a debate about who was the best TV detective, particularly on this thread; it seems disrespectful. All I would say is this - could anyone else have carried off a series where you knew who dunnit right at the beginning - sheer genius!

Also remember him as the taxi driver in 'Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World' which I think was an attempt to drag as many well known actors & actresses as possible out of retirement for one last hurrah.
