Would it not be better to try and get an upcoming band or artist to no 1 rather than a 20 year old song by a now defunct band (albeit a great one)

Well, exactly!

Last year, Cowell got his winner to cover Biffy Clyro, which capped their most successful year in the biz and probably made them a fortune.

The alternative was some pro-celebrity piss-take based on John Cage, who's only been dead for centuries.

Yeah, boo hiss that wicked old Simon Cowell Rolleyes

whatever song is covered the shit factor, people should get the original version because the original is better than copies. queen's bohemian rhapsody is so much better than g4's version.

same with snow patrols run and leona lewis cover version.

Why cover songs all the time anyway ? This is my gripe with X-factor. If these so called talented musicians have ANYTHING about them get them to write, record, and even play an instrument in a song they have created. Not kill a good original.

Go to open mic nights, go on youtube, myspace etc and see the vast amounts of talented musicians making original music that will go largely unnoticed because they didn't go on a glorified karaoke contest.
Sure it's open to the public anyone can enter! But really, if your face don't fit then you don't even get noticed. If you can't kill a shit cheesy poppy crap song then you stand no chance!

That guy who won last year was awful and is allegedly realising an album soon... Let's see where he is in 5 years time, let alone 20!

At least next year we won't have to worry because Syborg666 will be leading the way in X-factor and at least whatever song he covers will be music with some fucking balls!!!!

Edit - And by the way, I won't be buying a copy of "Smells like teen spirit" either. AFAIK Courtney Love still holds the recording rights so will make a fortune, secondly it is IN MY OPINION the weakest song in the back catalogue of Nirvana which funnily enough they grew to hate. As much as I would love to see Nirvana number 1, it won't be through that song.

too right money_shot. bands like snow patrol, kasabian, kaiser chiefs etc went up down the highways and byways of the country doing gig after gig then managing to get record deal. kasabian could become one the country's biggest bands. they will wipe the floor with the shit factor.

i hope someone does a proper crimbo song like back in the day. the wizard, slade, greg lake, Kirsty MacColl and The Pogues, Jona Lewie etc.

Firstly I fail to see why we should re-release an old number just to stick 2 fingers up to the X-Factor, I agree I'm too sick to death of talentless wannabes being handed stardom on a plate but on the other hand I would like to see something new and non manufactured make it to the Christmas No1, for example when was the last time an artist even bothered their arse to write a Christmas song, as much as Shakin Steven's was rank you have to hand it to him that Merry Christmas Everyone was a great number and just for the record 1994 was the last time any artist bothered to write a new Christmas song and that was mariah carey with All I Want For christmas Is You. I may be old fashioned but we could really do with some new Christmas songs as every year we have to be subjected to the daily ritual of the same old numbers aswell as having to spend the whole day with the family and the BLOODY INLAWS !!!!!!!!!!!Big Laugh

Who the fuck gives a shit about the charts these days?!?!??!

Bands can get to number 1 nowadays by only selling the same amount that once upon a time would barely get you into the top 40. The charts are defunct, hence the demise of Top of the Pops and the attempts to make the charts "more relevant" by taking into account downloads as well

When was the last time anyone on here bought a single? And, let's be honest, when was the last time you didn't just download something for free anyway
