RE: 20 years of the Premier League - fazzer77 - 23-04-2012 00:36 Worst Team ? Swindon Town of 93/94 Worst Goalkeeper ? Dave Beasant at Chelsea Worst Striker ? Jason Lee of Nott'm Forest (He's got a pineapple on his head .....) Greatest win by a Smaller Team over a Bigger Club ? Barnsley's 1-0 win at Anfield in 97/98 Most Spectacular Own Goal ? Peter Enckleman for Villa v Birmingham 2002/03 Most Spectacular Mistake by a player in a match ? Fabien Barthez for Man Utd at Arsenal 2001/02 Most Controversial Refereeing Decision ? Pedro Mendez (Spurs) vs Manchester United in 2004/05 - Roy Carroll did carry the ball over the goal-line!! RE: 20 years of the Premier League - Regenerated - 23-04-2012 02:00 I'll do some "worst" all time answers aswell then. Good idea. Worst team - Portsmouth when they went in to administration condemning them to relegation in 2010. Avram Grant was manager and they sank faster than the Titanic. Worst goalkeeper - Paul Jones (Wolverhampton Wanderers) - 2002/2003 season. Inexplicably replaced Michael Oakes as first choice keeper and made us go down even faster than we were already with a string of howlers. Worst striker - Tomas Brolin (Leeds United) - Was a superstar playing for Sweden in the early 1990s, but when he joined Leeds towards the end of the decade he looked fat, bloated, over the hill and shit. Greatest win by a small team over a big club - Has to be when Southampton trashed Manchester United 6-3 at The Dell in 1996/1997 season. United had Roy Keane sent off early on, then fell apart as Saints ran roughshod over them at the Dell for the second successive season. United had a horrible record there and this was no different - they claimed afterwards they couldn't see each other because of their grey shirts. Most spectacular own goal - There's a few that spring to mind - I agree that the Enckleman calamity was up there with the best. There's also Alan Smith's own goal while playing for Leeds against Wolves at Molineux in 2002/2003 when he volleyed our corner in at the near post and Alan Stubb's sliding clearance which turned in to a volleyed own goal while playing for Everton. Can't remember who they were playing against. RE: 20 years of the Premier League - eagle_si - 23-04-2012 10:10 Any Best XI is inevitably going to be dominated by Manchester United players, as they've won over half the titles. So I've come up with a Man U XI vs The Rest XI Man United XI GK: Peter Schmeichel RB: Gary Neville CB: Jaap Stam CB: Rio Ferdinand LB: Denis Irwin RM: David Beckham CM: Roy Keane (captain) CM: Paul Scholes LM: Ryan Giggs ST: Wayne Rooney ST: Ruud van Nistelrooy Subs: Edwin van der Sar, Steve Bruce, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Paul Ince, Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona Manager: Sir Alex Ferguson, obviously To anyone who says "You can't leave out Cristiano Ronaldo". Well, I have, so That United midfield from about 10-12 years ago had it all, so that's why I've chosen them all together. The Rest XI GK: Nigel Martyn (Crystal Palace, Leeds, Everton) just 'cos I'm biased RB: Micah Richards (Man City) Right Back is nearly always the most difficult position to fill. Micah gets in as I thought this current City team needed representation. CB: Sol Campbell (Tottenham, Arsenal) Best English defender of his generation and member of the Invincibles CB: Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea) Cornerstone of their back-to-back title winning team LB: Ashley Cole (Arsenal, Chelsea) He might be a twa.t, but he's the obvious choice for left back. Wouldn't have been half the player without his loan spell at another London club in 2000 RM: Thierry Henry (Arsenal) Couldn't leave him out, but there were other candidates up front so I'll stick him on the wing, where he started his career CM: Patrick Vieira (captain) (Arsenal) Would be great to see him up against Keane again CM: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) I actually am not a big Gerrard fan, but he has to be in for the period in the mid 2000s when he really was world-class. LM: Robert Pires (Arsenal) Created loads of goals and scored loads too ST: Dennis Bergkamp (Arsenal) Genius. Probably my favourite ever non-Palace player. ST: Alan Shearer (Blackburn, Newcastle) 260 Premier League goals, top of the scoring charts by a mile. He HAS to be in. Subs: David Seaman (Arsenal), Jamie Carragher (Liverpool), Gareth Bale (Tottenham), Arjen Robben (Chelsea), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), David Silva (Man City), Didier Drogba (Chelsea) Manager: Arsene Wenger (Arsenal) RE: 20 years of the Premier League - Master Yoda - 23-04-2012 10:39 Best Manager - Fergie Best Goal - Paulo Di Canio v Wimbledon in 2000... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63czdUW_R-s Best Save - Pepe Reina Double save v Everton in 2009....(at around 1:10 into this clip) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x50-whIPFc0 Best Game - Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle (the first one in 1996, Collymore's winner) Best Moment - Kevin Keegan's meltdown - "....I'd luv it if we beat them, luv it....." Best Goal Celebration - Fowler snorting the lining of the pitch after scoring in the derby, in response to Everton fan's years of jibes that he was a cocaine user. Or as Gerard Houllier embarrassingly said afterwards..."he was chewing the grass" !!! Best Team - Arsenal's Invincibles Best Overseas Player - Henry Best British Player - Ryan Giggs All Time Best Player - Henry All Time Best XI - GK-Peter Schmeichel, RB-Denis Irwin, CB-Sami Hyypia, CB-Tony Adams, LB-Ashley Cole, RM-David Beckham, CM-Roy Keane, CM-Steven Gerrard, LM-Ryan Giggs, CF-Denis Bergkamp, CF-Thierry Henry All Time Premier League Cult Hero - Gianfranco Zola (Chelsea) RE: 20 years of the Premier League - jumbo_jim - 23-04-2012 11:16 Best Manager - Alex Ferguson Best Goal - Phillipe Albert chipping Peter Schmeichal Best Game - Liverpool 4 Newcastle 3 (The Sequel) Best Moment - Di Canio stopping play with an open goal as opposing goalie was injured Best Goal Celebration - Ketsbaia going mental, ripping his top off and attacking advertising boards Best Team - Blackburn's title winning team Best Overseas Player - Bergkamp Best British Player - Le Tissier All Time Best Player - Le Tissier All Time Best XI - Gk: Seaman RB: Garry Kelly LB: S. Worst Goalkeeper - Taibi Worst Striker - Andrea Silenzi Greatest win by a Smaller Team over a Bigger Club - Bradford's 1-0 win at Anfield to secure Premiership status Most Spectacular Own Goal - Think it was Premiership, so Jamie Pollock beating 2 players before slotting home Most Spectacular Mistake by a player in a match - Michael Turner trying to backheel a free kick to his keeper, resulting in Liverpool scoring Most Controversial Refereeing Decision - The beachball scoring for Sunderland RE: 20 years of the Premier League - Master Yoda - 23-04-2012 14:05 Worst Team - Derby County 2007/08 - Finished bottom with the worst points tally in Premier League history. Worst Goalkeeper - Massimo Taibi (Man Utd) - Bought for 4.5 million in 1999, played just 4 times for Utd and was nicknamed 'The Blind Venetian' after a string of howlers. Was loaned out in January 2000 and then sold that summer for 2.5 million. he cost Utd 500K per appearance.
