the sentence was a bit hard back in the day i mean that ian watkins guy has just got 5 years more for molesting babies mind you its always been like that property always coming before people.

the great train robbery could be seen as the first big robbery to be closely followed by the media who turned them into heros. i mean do we know the people involved in the Brinks mat robbery or the huge robberys that have taken place in the 80's and 90's and beyond

Biggs was a two bit criminal and for years goaded the British authorities from his safe haven in Rio, only coming back when he needed NHS treatment that he could not get elsewhere. While I never wish ill on the dead, he was not the celebrity figure to be admired, as parts of the media bandwagon would have us believe.
As for Watkins; it doesn't matter what protection he gets someone will get the little twat at some point. At the very least he is certainly going to get a sore arse every time he goes for a shower...owned by Mr Big!!

Couldn't agree more. To glorify people like him is utterly wrong.

After 35 years in the slammer, his farts will never make a noise again Big Grin

Don't know, it's been pretty high profile.

It's fucked up alright and even this week, he was recorded on a phone call saying he didn't know what all the fuss was about. Being so matter of fact about it, made hearing that he was shaking like a leaf when sentence was passed that much sweeter.

What's particularly disturbing is that a former partner told the police in 2008 that she suspected him of paedophilia. They apparently did nothing and are now under investigation themselves.

What a world!

Why is this guy worthy of a thread?

Because although Biggs was an unremarkable man he was also a cartoon character created by the media which made him the subject of enduring curiosity. The train robbery itself was the stuff of a movie script and never before had a train been stolen like that. This was followed by Biggs escaping over the prison wall, another big media story, and several subsequent escapes from the law. Given the high level of interest in Biggs over the years I'd say he's certainly deserving of his own thread, because despite his minor role in the crime in question he became the public face of what is still a 'great' robbery in the eyes of the media and with his escapes he became a cartoon character they couldn't resist. Like it or not Biggs was always a big story and probably always will be. The story of the great train robbery continues to fascinate and Biggs is its avatar.

Spare a kind thought for Ian "H" Watkins (of Steps) who gets a lot of abuse on Twitter these days.
