But why was someone so dangerous going to be released soon anyway having been given 13 life sentences for 13 terrifying armed robberies? And why was he put in an open prison when he'd escaped from prison twice before? And why did he only serve 8 years from his previous 27 years sentence for multiple armed robberies? What a completely crazy story.

Because it costs approx £30,000 a year to keep someone in prison and judges now take this into account when sentencing criminals. Money is now the overriding factor not justice, anyone who thinks that is an over the top comment, a few days ago a document was leaked in which Nick Clegg proposed that offenders who had been caught in possession of a knife on multiple occasions should be given community sentences to reduce the cost of housing them.

A sad indictment of the modern British "justice" system in the 21st Century. annoyed

Now we've got a convicted murderer on the run, who has already absconded three times before, yet was still allowed out on day release.
Arnold Pickering, imprisoned for stabbing a blind man, wrongly thought to be a paedophile, has previously escaped from Strangeways prison.

Quote:Justice Secretary Chris Grayling this morning promised to 'tear up' the current day release programme and suggested prisoners who had a history of escaping would no longer be allowed out. It came after MPs attacked the 'absolute scandal' of murderers being allowed out of prison 'willy nilly'.

I don't understand why a convicted murderer is allowed time out of prison whilst still doing a long sentence?

The system is clearly failing the victims of crime.
