Sad to hear. An actor who always displayed a sense of humour. Great Escape, Maverick and Rockford are all a fitting epitaph

Sad news, from "Maverick" to "Rockford Files" a long and distinguished career. Was regarded as a gentleman and all round good guy by his peers. A lifelong Los Angeles Raiders fan. R.I.P. James.

I think he is deserving all the plaudits for his career R.I.P. James and thank u for all the entertainment you gave us. I think Rockford files was perhaps a cop show that was vastly underrated since Starksy & Hutch was also around at the same time. Loved him in Maverick and remember given a role in the film with Mel Gibson. I think he a good sense of humour with a little dry wit.

Not sure it was underrated at the time. It was a big hit series when it was first released. The theme tune went on to be a top chart hit which I think reached number 1, though I would not swear to that. Its popularity did wane in later series as the novelty had worn off by then.
