Shame on the many fools who voted for Hamilton. He managed to beat Rosberg in what was effectively a 2 horse race. Big deal. Oh well the stellar year McIlroy had apparently counts for nothing. What do people expect him to do? Win all 4 majors before they vote honestly? RE: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014 - dominar rygel xvi - 16-12-2014 13:52 But what is this dumb award actually for? If it's for achievement then McIlroy wins it easily - no contest. But it's apparently for the PERSONALITY of the year - whatever that means. Maybe in terms of PERSONALITY the voters felt Hamilton was the better choice. RE: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014 - HEX!T - 16-12-2014 14:27 as an f1 fan im glad hamilton won. but im not so sure it wasnt placation on the bbc's part as they had been accused of being racist towards black sportsmen and women earlier this year. claims made as part of the reason hamilton was overlooked the last time he became champion. im not saying its true, but there were rumors. RE: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014 - Roger Patterson - 16-12-2014 14:38 The result has definitely damaged the reputation of the award and was even more bizarre than a non-coach winning the coach of the year. McIlroy’s astonishing year included back-to-back major triumphs, a World Golf Championship win, playing a crucial part in the Ryder Cup success and a return to world No.1 - and unlike Hamilton his amazing achievements weren't achieved with a clear competitive advantage over his rivals. RE: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014 - circles_o_o_o - 16-12-2014 14:43 Like Fernandez said, almost anyone can play golf if they want, which means you need to be exceptional to rise to the top, while only a lucky and determined few can get the breaks to compete in high-level motor racing, where the result of a race can depend on who has the best mechanics, because you score no points for breaking down. In terms of the 'personality' bit, who would you rather go for a pint with (assuming they don't bring their girlfriends along, because that might skew my choice ). Hamilton acts like a spoilt child sometimes, although he is maybe the most high profile out of the ten. I think there is an element of the British public believing that F1 belongs to us as a grand sporting tradition, and that Hamilton has triumphed despite Bernie's attempts to thwart him, with his stupid rule changes. He has done the most to put Britain on the sporting world map. Rory has done wonders for the image of Northern Ireland, but perhaps is too provincial for the general UK public's choice. RE: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014 - bcl - 16-12-2014 14:45 It's all about timing, Hamilton was recent, so more in the memory of the voters. Not how it should be, but realistically how it works. RE: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014 - HannahsPet - 16-12-2014 14:50 Sorry but anyone who thinks rory is a better sportsman is naive i mean all he does is hit a ball with a metal stick. i would have put him least 5th or 6th I mean that blind Skier who does 40-50mph in snow and she can only see about 5 metres in front of her and the girl who won skeleton gold at the olympics are better sportspeople than mcilroy. Hamilton won because he made this year fun to watch. unlike other years was down to the last races who would win and never know what would happen in each race itself RE: BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014 - barracuda - 16-12-2014 15:01 (16-12-2014 14:43 )circles_o_o_o Wrote: In terms of the 'personality' bit, who would you rather go for a pint with The amount of time that Hamilton spends in this country is close to zero. McIlroy would be a better bet if you wanted him for a night out.
