Richard Pryor, Tommy Cooper, Bill Hicks have been mentioned. I'd like to add Bill Bailey and Emo Phillips. And Alan Davies was very good when I saw him years ago.

I would have to say Dara O'brian as well, very funny man.
Dave Chappel is a good call as well, very good.
I went to see Chris Rock at the 02 last year and he was better then expected.
