He certainly was a one off and caused many an embarrassing moment in his royal life.

RIP

I'd go as far tob say that he supported the Queen with great pride and was steadfast by her side. He was more of a father figure of this nation than Boris will ever dream of being.

Some of the Duke's classics... Not all PC by current standards

When asked what he thought of his role in 1992 he replied "frankly, I'd rather have stayed in the Navy"

In 1967 he was asked if he'd like to visit the USSR. He said "I'd like to go to Russia very much, although the bastards murdered half of my family"

Allegedly to the Queen at her Coronation - "where did you get that hat?"

On seeing 2 Robots bump into each other at the Science Museum - " they're not mating, are they?"

"People think there's a rigid class system here but Dukes have been known to marry Chorus Girls. Some have even married Americans"

To a Mobility Scooter user." How many people have you knocked over this morning on that thing?"

"This could only happen in a Technical College". Said while stuck in a lift at Heriot Watt University.

"The Philippines must be half empty, you're all here running the NHS". Said to a Filipino Nurse during a Hospital visit.

To a resident of The Cayman Islands in 1994 - " You're all descended from Pirates aren't you?"

"Yak yak yak. Come on, get a move on" Shouted from on board Britannia to the Queen who was chatting on the dockside during a visit to Belize.

At the opening of the new British Embassy in Berlin in 2000. " It's a vast waste of space"

To a Hospital Matron in the Caribbean I'm 1966. "You have Mosquitoes, I have the Press"

During Elton John's performance at a Royal Variety Show..."I wish he'd turn the microphone off"

After being introduced to Cate Blanchett he asked if she could fix his DVD player because she worked in the film industry.

"Ah, so this is feminist corner" to a group of female Labour MPs whose name badges at a Palace Party all started with Ms.

To the Scottish Women's Institute in 1961 - "British Women can't cook"

He would not approve of any fuss at his passing. Very much a pragmatist and not one for self congratulation.

Had his moments for sure but his loyalty to the Queen cannot be questioned.

Rest in peace good Sir.

The BeKind/Pronoun mob are showing their true colours on Social Media. It seems their kindness doesn't stretch to people they don't like.

There's a surprise Rolleyes

Be interesting seeing what the Crucible does Saturday morning. I expect they will now have to start the day after, I can't see how they can work around the funeral without showing disrespect. IOM they should shorten the first round round matches length to get it over & done ASAP, & then revert back to normal match schedule the best as possible to ensure finishing on time.

I didn't see any of the tv coverage on the day of his death, but listened all afternoon on the radio and I learned a lot of interesting stuff about him I never knew.
Like some of the younger generation, he had trouble being accepted into the Royal Family at the start. But instead of developing a chip on his shoulder, he made the effort to fit in and carve a place for himself. Then, once he achieved that, he was able to change things for the better.

RIP Prince Philip, The Queen was lucky to have you.
