If we're talking strictly in terms of consistent individual brilliance dependant on position and role on the field, technically Mascherano was the best player.

James Rodriguez should have won that award, I don 't think Messi deserved it, maybe if he just scored a winner in the final then maybe.. But he didn't. He looked lazy and uninterested at times. Like when he walked away from the team huddle at extra time..
