That's true, it was quite widely discussed before the Melbourne test started that Ponting was taking a big risk by playing in that one.

Aus won toss and bat. Bearing in mind the pitch and overhead conditions I just wonder whether this might be a good toss to lose. Having said that batting last on that wicket could be tricky. Hmmm, mixed feelings about this.

Australia have won 14 of the last 16 tests in Sydney, a great record, but England should not be too disappointed at losing the toss. Ponting's injury could be a blessing in disguise for him, as a break might be good for him at the moment. Clarke is Australia's 43rd test captain and Beer is Australia's 10th specialist spinner since Shane Warne last played.

Australia are 55 for 1 at lunch, Phillip Hughes gets caught right before lunch.
