So 8 is really bad and happens near to where there's a fault in the Earth's crust but 4 that we might get in say Bradford or Edenbridge or somewhere isn't half as bad. Which is just as well. Plus seismographs are really sensitive devices that record earthquakes and during the war recorded the explosions of bombs all the way away in Germany. So they know when the bombs exploded when they bombed the Mohne Dam for instance because the explosions were recorded back in the UK.
