1329 - Robert I 'the Bruce', King of Scotland died. He earned a place in Scottish history for his legendary victory over the English at Bannockburn in 1314.

1906 - In Glasgow, Cunard launched the Lusitania - the world's fastest and largest liner.

1939 - King George VI became the first British monarch to visit the United States of America.

1772 - Robert Stevenson, Scottish engineer, was born. He built Bell Rock lighthouse, the first in Scotland.

1924 - The last sighting of English climber George Mallory - seen 800 feet from the summit of Mount Everest during his third attempt to become the first man to conquer the world's highest mountain.

1987 - New Zealand's Labour government legislates against nuclear weapons and nuclear powered vessels. This makes New Zealand the first and (as of June 2006) only nation to ban these things from its territory.

2001 - Former Prime Minister Tony Blair was elected to a second term in a landslide.
