Before his acting career took off,James Arness was a highly decorated soldier after serving in the second world war.Despite being severely wounded,he was awarded with The Bronze Star,The Purple Heart,The European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze battle stars,The World War II Victory Medal and The Combat Infantryman Badge for his heroics.

There was a sequel to E.T planned not long after the film was released.Steven Spielberg had put together a nine page outline,which by 1985 had been added to and was almost put into preproduction.The plot revealed that the little,loveable alien was called Zrek and he was being hunted by another race of lifeforms that land on earth and terrorise Elliot for information about Zrek's whereabouts.After realising that this was probably the most ridiculous idea ever,Spielberg wised up and made The Colour Purple instead.
