This is what commentator Barry Davies said at the time: "They're appealing for offside but the ball came back off the boot of Steve Hodge." After watching 2 television replays the penny began to drop with Davies and he said "Now at what point was he offside? Or was it a use of the hand that England are complaining about?" The referee didn't have the best of views of the incident, so if you want to pin the blame on anyone why not the linesman, who had a completely unobstructed view but kept his flag down.
