Ugh! I used to frighten girls with daddy-long-legs once (or craneflies as they are also called) holding them in my hand.

The way to get rid of a wasp is to stay VERY still, as it is only looking for food, don't wear anything bright(not great if it's summer) and if necessary a light swat of the hand. If you injure it it will send out a signal to any other wasps so either kill it straight away OR move slowly away-don't run!

If a bee stings you, it will die and if you are allergic you might go into anaphalatic shock so it is best to find out in advance if you are allergic to bee stings-(Not sure how you would go about that.)

Hiding in water won't get rid of bees or wasps(unlike what you've seen in cartoons)

Bees should be encouraged as they are better for the environment.

British bees were virtually wiped out during the Second World War so we have in fact had Johnny Foreigner bees for years. We still need them for pollination and of course delicous honey.

The system of the hive is made up of the Queen, drones and workers.

If you discover a hive near you(as we did with a nest under the window once) call someone to fumigate it. Bees will not return to a hive that has been compromised.

A wasps nest needs completely destroying by the Council.

If attacked by bees stay calm and don't run . Crouch down and if possible put your arms across your chest. That is easier said than done-about as useful as saying don't wear anything bright in the Summer.
