RE: UFC - mitchell - 08-08-2010 16:40

..... Well... I almost wanna say no comment but seen as it's my 300th post i feel obligated to do so... Tap out... Tap out, it was half a tap with no out involved, i half hoped it would end in controversy with Sonnen sayin he didn't tap, it seemed as if he thought about it & before he knew it his nerves had kicked in & made up his mind on his behalf,
The fight started as i thought it would with Anderson 'someting to prove' Silva coming out with his distinctive kicks & punches & then he got caught with a half decent punch & from then on Sonnen had total octagon control. Sonnen's corner should of told him coming out for the 5th not to do any thing that would give Silva any momentum as he knows he needs a stoppage to keep his title, close man close!!!
Both camps will have something to look back on if there is a rematch (There should be), but i think Silva would win it in maybe 2 rounds as he'll know to stay away from Sonnen & will do so & use his unorthordox striking to pick off Sonnen.

Roy Nelson v Junior dos Santos, It was a good first round but i think dos Santos ran out of ideas after as Nelson was still there, He's lucky he didn't lose as he never lifted his hands above his shoulders & Nelson almost caught him a few times. I said dos Santos would be the one to give Lesner the most problems but after this fight i can see Lesner doing the same as he did with Carwin. I still wanna see 'Big Country' v Lesner.

How Matt Hughes choked out Almeida like that i don't know fair play to him. Rafael dos Anjos was unlucky with the injury as he may have won the fight, but congrats to Guida i love his style. Thiago Alves spent too long out to come back & face a fighter like Jon Fitch, who as good as he is i don't think the UFC would be happy to have him represent one of the toughest divisions in mma for too long, although i think GSP would be too quick for him.

How the fuck did i forget Stefan Struve in my predictions, he reminds me of when i saw Rashad Evans on TUF & thought if he can get himself to the right camp & sharpen up the edges he'll be a top fighter, i think the same goes for Struve, who has the skill & talent & at only 22 has a long time left in the sport, if he can add some wrestling to his kickboxing & BBJ he may well challenge the top fighters although even at 247lb i think he's in the heavyweight division due to his hight as there is not much meat on his bones & that maybe a problem with the title challenges as his only 2 losses came against dos Santos & Nelson, but still i think his time will come.

All in all chaps it was a good night, thats 2 in a row now after a fairly disappointing first half of the year, roll on Aug 28th.

Sweet 300th post mate.Nice u kept it for the UFC thread Smile
Rashad was right before the show..He said Sonnen would leave his head in a stupid position and get submitted!
Thought Thiago looked awful. He looked ill.He can't cut so much weight.Left himself totally drained by the look of it..Fitch even said to his corner he felt weak!
I know he's short but he's got the power so he should move up in weight i think.

RE: UFC - mitchell - 08-08-2010 17:00

Yeah i agree with you there, he may take 1 or 2 losses to start with depending on the oppo but he could be a good fighter at middleweight even with up to 7inch hight disadvantage.

RE: UFC - Winston Wolfe - 08-08-2010 20:31

UFC 117 was one of their best events for a while... All the fights on the main card were good, apart from Fitch & Alves.

Despite all Sonnen's trash talk, I thought he'd get beaten in a similar fashion to Sandman & Forest Griffin, but Sonnen backed up his words, showed a lot of composure and basically beat Silva up for 5 rounds. Regardless of what anyone thinks of Sonnen, he was very unlucky to lose that fight via submission. This was the wake up call Silva needed. He has been coasting for too long...

RE: UFC - mitchell - 09-08-2010 00:25

I've just watched the Silva v Sonnen fight again, only this time with concentration rather than excitement & it seems Sonnen only has himself to blame. It took him till the last round to attempt a submission & even that was half hearted, over 20min of ground domination & only 1 sub attempt, that is poor for a NCAA division 1 wrestler, Silva on the other hand was always looking for the submission attempt from his back attempting several triangles an armbar & a kimura. Sonnen got himself caught up in his own "I'm gonna put a beating on Anderson" & ended up throwing too many little rabbit punches rather than looking to take Silva's back which he could have done in the first round.

Dana says there is no decision yet on a rematch as Vitor Belfort is also in the equation.
Groundnpound i think you may get your wish for Thiago Alves to go up to middleweight, as Dana says it maybe his only option???

Good morning!
I was at a wrestling seminar that my local mixed martail arts centre was hosting weeks ago. This is to help us initiate more effective take down technics & my training partner, a black belt in kung fu, kinda messed up his foot placement during a throw he was practicing on me.
We'd been shown this throw and told where best to place our feet in order to gain the leverage to take down opponents without expending too much energy. Unfortunately, he was so concerned about the right way to grip my arms for the throw, that he left his right leg forward, his leg bent at almost 90 degrees so that basically, purely without malice, he spiked my rib cage as it quite literally bounced of his knee.
I sort of spun around and landed on my face I lay there for a few seconds, quietly groaning in pain
My friend Darren, once cracked a rib and brags to this day that straight afterwards, despite the pain, he still managed to go on a night out drinking with me.
I can now go one better, as we were only 30mins into a 3hr wrestling seminar & I carried on, even managing to submit a few amatuer league cage fighters at the end, using various choke holds I'd learned at Taekwondo.
Don't get me wrong, I did get my arse handed to me a few times. But I did well considering I'm pretty much a novice at MMA.
One guy had won his first ever cage fight the night before & he wrestled me to the mat, scoring a pin, then I pinned him straight after & then neither of us could best each other before they called time.
He shook my hand, said that I did excellently & asked how long I'd been training in wrestling. It was 2.35pm and I just looked up at the clock & replied, "Well, since about... 12 o'clock."
He and some of the fighters thought I showed potential, enough to try out for the Amatuer League, which was very flattering. Shame I have a damaged rib now though Sad
I've no actual desire to become cage fighter, do MMA classes rarely but I'm a huge MMA fan & hey, even couch potato football fans enjoy the occasional kickabout ;-)
More later
