It's a popularity contest and nothing more. If it was about Sporting achievement then Sarah Storey would have walked it.

We should be lobbying to get this damn thing scrapped, if the BBC claim they are short of money. Use it for something more worthy of the name of public service (open a public conversation around that as it differs from individual to individual - I acknowledge) and put in place an independent body that ascertains where the shortfall is in terms of output that reflects many more of the Licence fee payers (I am one of them - Bob Ross aside, I get no value) currently underrepresented! Then impose those before the corporation gets to decide anything else!

It is obvious where the corporation is top heavy, and - equally - lacking in large part. Seems that output is determined more by insiders preferences than anything else! No surprise that they tried to get BBC4 removed as a necessity. It was the only 'intellectual' based channel, before the last DG declared an unashamed race to the bottom, and it too became 'populist pap'

Well done to Mary Earp in winning the Sports Personality of the Year.

But I found it disappointed that we didn't acknowledge Stuart Broad's marvellous playing career. bladewave And then there was 7 times world champion Ronnie O Sullivan who didn't even reach the podium

Second year in a row I think England women's football won it

No recognition for the Scottish men's curling team who sealed World and European titles in the same year.
Real shame.

Arguably one of the worst line - ups of candidates ever! No surprise who won it, it wouldn't be the BBC if someone - anyone - from the land of football didn't at least come close! I was in hospital for the programme - and not to trivialise why i or my fellow patients were there - but this pap would lead anyone to feel more than a little unwell! Exactly what has R McIlroy done this year?? How many wins??

Some will scoff at the mention of curling in this context, but I agree with you 100% It wasn't that long ago that curling was the flavour of the month among the masses watching when it became the latest bandwagon! There are countless sports that should be recognised, but as usual, it is only the small number of 'overly' exposed ones that the media latch on to, or have an unhealthy obsession over!

Bearing in mind Eve Muirhead was in nominated in Olympic year the omission of the Mens curling team this year seems all the more unfair to my mind.
