I would add that the PR campaign around masks was botched from the start.

By making it overwhelmingly about “protecting yourself” they gave people the impression that it was a personal choice, influenced by their own individual perception of risk. (“I’m not scared, I’ll take my chances, bla bla bla ...”)

They should have relentlessly hammered home the fact that masks are meant to protect other people from you. There should have been a social stigma attached to not wearing a mask with no good reason.

The message was mostly: Pretty please, wear a mask for your own good.

It should have been: Wear a mask to protect other people. No excuses*.

*Except for legitimate excuses.

Just for context, India is nowhere near their 2nd wave peak yet and many public heath officials believe the actual covid deaths could be as much as six times higher than those reported.

Not that any of that excuses the shambles here.

I worried that if the Indian variant does take off in a big way we could be right back at the crossroads of the oringinal outbreak pretty quickly again and whether this variant dictates either we stand tall or fall, and this variant could very easily do untold damage and may even bring the virus rollout to a grinding halt. I do hope the vaccines are proven to fully protect against this variant but there is a part of me that doesn't share the governments position on protection.
This could turn out to be the most critical moment of all.

Other than that we have a colleague of mine at work who has to isolate and another awaiting test results if hers is positive i may have to have the test if the other rresult is positive as I have had close contact. I'll have to see what the situation is.

With the changes to the lockdown rules there should be some entertainments opening up.
Including various gentleman's clubs. Pole dancing shouldn't be a problem but lap dancers will probably have to keep to the 2 metre rule.

The changes may have some impact on the shows. Some of the cam girls could be returning to their former work. And it could (not 100% sure) be the end of the split screen on Xpanded.

They aren't even counting deaths in a lot of Indian villages where there is little or no healthcare provision. Six times higher is probably an underestimate.

They're just cremating bodies by the roadside in some places where they can't cope.

'Official' figures will be meaningless.

37 year olds are now able to book a jab now.

The total cases are down to below 2,000 with 5 deaths.

^My Nephew is 25 and got his first (Pfizer) jab yesterday. Apparently one of our local centres had doses left at closing time, so the staff were instructed to contact anyone they could think of. One of the Nurses is his Friend's Mother so she got her son to text all his mates.

2 positive tests at work so two staff members in self isolation, it was supposed to be a week off for me, instead I'm having to work this week as cover and I am not sure if I'll get it rearranged and was told there is no requirement for me to take a test. Which is something I find a little strange.

When it is a small team, it does have an impact. And i'm the only other cover they have.

The point of the post is to show not so much the numbers but the attitude towards those numbers particularly the downplaying from the British government. Also 6 times higher would still be just a tad over half as much, even 10 times higher would be a decent chunk less
