For some reason UKTV were still showing the unedited version. So there's cruel irony. https://www.scotland.org/features/robert-burns-and-slavery RE: General News Thread - terence - 12-06-2020 12:11 i just learned that one of newrys favourite sons who has a statue, street named after him and a gaelic team was a horrible racist and confederate. john mitchel. just read wikipedia about his exploits. illuminating to say the least. think there's calls to remove the statue and rename the street, though i'm not sure about 'the mitchels gaa' reaction yet. When this started with the death of George Floyd, there was lots of coverage & debate on the serious issues with BLM & how they can be addressed & changed. Yet now for the past few days it’s just been about statues and things like Little Britain and the focus has gone away from the real issues surrounding BLM and those leading this BLM movement need to get the message out to stop focusing on things like statues & Little Britain and get back on track with the real issues that BAME people need to be tackled. This focus on statues etc won’t achieve anything RE: General News Thread - Rammyrascal - 12-06-2020 12:22 (12-06-2020 11:50 )skully Wrote: As Charle says we have people over here using it as an excuse to cause trouble, which doesn't help the BLM movement. Same with another person that’s on this “hitlist” Sir Robert Peel. BLM “Activists” have targeted statues of him in Scotland and in England. Yet they’ve targeted the wrong man. The Sir Robert Peel that’s been targeted is the founder of the police force & wasn’t in the slave trade at all. The “Activists” should have been targeting his father who is also called Sir Robert Peel who was in the slave trade. Fully agree, there are definately people hijacking this just for an excuse to cause trouble and the BLM movement needs to distance themselves and denounce them RE: General News Thread - terence - 12-06-2020 12:25 ^peel and the irish go back a ways though! But this Sir Robert Peel was being targeted for being a slave trader when he isn’t whatsoever. Apparently another case now of BLM “activists” jumping to the wrong conclusions in Liverpool as they’ve vandalised “Penny Lane” street signs saying Penny Lane is named after a slave trader. The slavery museum in Liverpool says this is not confirmed.
