I think that just prevents the sender from knowing that the message has been read, i.e. they can't track it to see whether you got it or not.
To block the sender from messaging at all, I think you go to your profile and add them to your ignore list.

It is correct that adding a member to your "Ignore List" will block that member from sending you any private messages.
