Nintendo's forthcoming 3DS portable games console is set to have graphics rivalling those of the Sony PlayStation 3 games console.

Technology blog IGN has reported that the device, which is to be launched at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, is set to have a a stereoscopic 3D screen, which will allow users to play games in 3D without the need for special glasses.

Citing the developers, IGN reported that the console will come with the display and processor capabilities surpassing that of Nintendo's Wii console, and standing toe-to-toe with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

Experts believe that this device will benefit from all of the current hype surrounding 3D technology, and expect the 3DS to sell well.

The company has high hopes for the device, believing it capable of cementing Nintendo's position of power in the global gaming console market.
