There’s nothing wrong with seeking a bit of friendly advice (& perhaps a little confidence boost) before approaching the big boys, but you’re absolutely right. No one’s ever going to get a job without approaching the channels directly.
So far, I think that the best advice is to get some professional photos done. At least then you’ll have something concrete which you can approach people with.

and it's interesting how the sub heading is phrased

An intentional play on words or a coincidental use of the name of the channel's hottest competitor? Who can say..
