You could be right, though quite a few of the indistinct shapes look like people to me. Stared at it for quite a while before I felt a bit 'David Hemmings' in the film Blowup and decided to leave it (only on this thread can a cultural reference to a movie from 1966 not feel dated).

Anyway, a few examples of the visual poetry of Belgian artist René Magritte...

Goggle Head (1969) by Dame Elisabeth Frink...

Even though this is one of my favourite sculptures, I've always had a big problem with it. It's meant to symbolise evil and inhumanity in all of mankind. Not specifically referring to an individual person but as a species. The eyes of the figure are covered by highly-polished sunglasses to give a sense of menace, but also to hide the shame of all he has seen and done. The problem is, I feel a bit sorry for him. Can you imagine how much this guy got picked on as a kid, looking like that? Also, because of his gigantic facial features, it suggests an amount of retardation. Like he's some sort of powerful man-child doing terrible things to a world he can't understand.

But, aesthetically speaking, it's a beautiful piece of work.

Might not be to everyone's taste but I've always loved the very strange and disturbing art of H.R Giger.
