Fair enough. It was only a thought.

Maybe your video's have become the latest must haves, for "keep up with the Jones's clan", to have on their mobile phones. laugh

I had a look at my uploads on megaporn and rapidshare... nothing remarkable, aside from the files on megaporn having their download count back again (they all went to 0 for ages). Charlie C from July has the top spot at 202 downloads.

I'm stumped as to why you'd see such a big rise and nobody else has (so far).

Do you have a blog or such where you post all your vids too?

No I haven't put them anywhere else.

This graph illustrates the recent spike in video downloads. In the last few days the numbers have also been higher than the long term baseline with one telephonist in particular having had a ridiculously high figures.
I would still like to get to the bottom of it, so any plausible explanations are welcome.

I've done a few google searches without any success. I'm not very clued up about other forums as this is the only one I look at (apart from the caravanning forum and I got no joy there).

I will search tirelessly until I find the cads and/or bounders responsible for this outrage and then I will have satisfaction from them, by god I will!

Well there not posted on my forum, if somebody does that, their post seems to be deleted if they don't mention original vidmaker, and in some cases they get banned.

The answer is that sometimes certain files on megaupload are unavailable for some reason and people click multiple times on the links trying to download them, thereby creating completely false download figures.

I can't believe that it registers as a download when you just click on the download link. When the link is working it takes you to the video page where you can click on premium download or wait 25 seconds for the regular download option. Choosing regular opens the download window where you choose "open with" or "save file". Surely it only registers the download when you click "ok" on that window.

Megaupload give rewards based on download numbers so I would be amazed if they were handing out freebies based on false data. Also your theory does not explain why the numbers rose so sharply at the beginning of December when the "temporarily unavailable" issue has been around for as long as I have been using MU.

I have just tested your theory on a video with only 12 downloads (so that it will register the next increase at 14). I took it through to the "save as" window, the last point before the download actually starts. I did this six times and no increase in download numbers has registered.

RE: Unusual video download patterns. - aaron - 28-12-2010 18:07

There is a guy on the megaupload forum who says he uploaded a film in 4 parts and was told by several people that part 4 was unavailable. When he went to check on it he found that parts 1 to 3 of the film had 100 downloads each and part 4 which had been unavailable for a while had 600 downloads. Since people had told him that part 4 of the film was unavailable it should have had less downloads than the first 3 parts, not 6 times as many. The conclusion seems to be that you can't rely on the megaupload stats and sometimes the figures are simply way out. The unusual video download patterns that you report are almost certainly not real downloads.
