I've been trying out StaxRip and QTGMC and I'm pretty impressed with both. StaxRip provides a great interface for working with avisynth and editing/cutting video. It also demuxes the video and audio automatically when you load a video, which (mostly) sorts out the audio sync and presumably some errors too.

Below are caps of different deinterlace filters. I suggest downloading them and flicking between them in Irfanview (or whatever image viewer you use) to best see the difference. Obviously a cap doesn't tell the full story, but you can see the difference in detail and sharpness between QTGMC and Yadif. QTGMC on the faster setting competes very well with the slower setting and was about 50% quicker with my encoding settings.
