think might have solved the recording solutions found something in Ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Iomega-Screenplay-Pro-HD-Hard-Drive-Media-Player-3-5-SATA-Enclosure-Caddy-Case-/330822388008?_trksid=p2047675.m2109&_trkparms=aid%3D555001%26algo%3DPW.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D29%26meid%3D4225792972468572356%26pid%3D100010%26prg%3D1013%26rk%3D2%26sd%3D360538973410%26#shId

was looking for an enclosure for a new sata drive and media player its all combined and it records as well 30 quid is worth a risk if it solves all my problems and saves me time converting as well

This looks like an interesting device, and being able to supply your own hard drive will save money over buying it with a drive pre-installed.

I just read a review of the unit and it looks good except for one annoying drawback - it can't play back (or presumably record) files encoded using H264. That would put me off as I usually use the MP4/Mov format encoded using H264, as it's such an efficient codec.

I just thought I'd mention it in case you were unaware.

i had a look and apparently there is a transcode server on cd that comes with device. im sure as its networked i might be able to use PS3media server which i already use for streaming movies to my games console.

are there any devices that will record straight to h264 formats

The only ones I've found so far are imports from China. This one looks interesting:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1080p-H-264-DLNA-HDTV-Media-Player-Video-Recorder-PVR-/230597255924 (£101.73, hard disc not included).

It has an Ethernet connection and a wireless dongle is an additional $14.99. It has two built-in DVB-T tuners too! It can record from standard definition Freeview but not HD. Perfect for recording babe channels though.

Just a quick update on the kimsufi servers I mentioned earlier in this thread, the cheapest option is now just £2.99 per month, for a 500GB drive

Cheers!

I've got a raspberry pi recently and have been musing on making it a media centre, but a TV recorder pi is a good idea, shame I've only got Freeview and can't watch S66 etc apart from webstreams...
