You're right bcl. Thank you for your sensible comment. What appears to be a miscarriage of justice is understandable when you consider the timing.

But it's apparently for the PERSONALITY of the year - whatever that means. Maybe in terms of PERSONALITY the voters felt Hamilton was the better choice.

According to the BBC themselves it's not really about sporting prowess but popularity.

They say Rory didn't win not because anyone disrespected his remarkable achievements but because he just isn't popular enough.

Personally I'm surprised Carl Froch only got 11,000 votes. What happened to the 80,000 people who saw him beat George Groves at Wembley?

Yes bcl was right about that. But also most of those who vote are people who watch the BBC a lot - and the BBC doesn't cover golf or boxing anymore, which is why those sports never do well in this award. F1 on the other hand still gets big coverage from the BBC.

Football: Kick and head a ball into a net.
Motor Racing: Drive a faster car than any other car bar one round a circuit for a bit
Rugby Union/League: Run a ball over a line and kick it between some sticks.
Cricket: Bowl a ball at three stumps.
Hit a ball over a rope or run like #@ck.
Athletics: Run like #$ck, throw like #$ck or jump like #$ck.
Tennis: Hit a ball into a court so your opponent can't reach it
Tour de France: Pedal like #$ck
Darts: Throw arrows at a board for a bit
Snooker: Hit a few balls into 6 holes with a stick
Boxing: Bosh

Hmmmmmm bladewave.

I've heard a rumour that Caroline Wozniacki has a large phone bill coming this month Wink

Never really understood the 'Personality' part myself, they should just rename it 'Sports Most Popular/Famous' award because that's all it boils down to.
To illustrate my point, didn't we fucking give Jimmy Savile knighthood? What a great guy he turned out to be eek
I'm sure if his real personality was ever brought to light from behind his mask of good deeds we would think differently.
We don't really know them.

This thread typically represents what this forum has become this year.

A yearly celebration of the UK's massive contribution to world sport. Something that should promote positivity and fond memories. And all some of you can do is slap on your tin hats and spout negative, bigoted and insensitive nonsense.

Oh well the stellar year McIlroy had apparently counts for nothing. What do people expect him to do? Win all 4 majors before they vote honestly?

The F1 champion is almost always in the best car.

I am a huge Rory fan. And also a huge Lewis fan. You could not wish for two better grounded role models in sport. It turns out that Lewis is more popular this year. Don't make such a big deal out of it.

It's not just this year - many sports including golf just don't do well in this award. Hamilton's win was really a vote for F1 and demonstrated the popularity of that.

As others have pointed out, McIlroy’s stunning successes were achieved many months ago, whereas Hamilton's title was won only 3 weeks before the vote.

In addition to the crucial timing of things, McIlroy’s successes were also on Sky TV only, whereas helpfully for Hamilton F1 had extensive coverage on the BBC itself.

What this forum has become this year? Really?

It's strange that people express the same opinions elsewhere, without receiving any condemnation from you.

Take this example from Twitter:
“Absolutely ridiculous that @McIlroyRory has not won Sports Personality 2014. @BBCSPOTY has turned into a complete joke. It’s such a great shame. Huge congrats to @LewisHamilton, but he had 1 person to beat all year.” (Ian Poulter)

Or this one:
“Technology of the year goes to the silver and red dodgem!!! Just have to win all 4 next year @McIlroyRory!” (Lee Westwood)

Or this one:
"McIlroy, wins multiple golf Majors and Ryder Cup. Froch, boxing World champion. In fact every other nominee was more deserving the Hamilton." (Joseph Barton)

Instead of moaning about what the forum has become this year, perhaps you want to say something about what Twitter has become?

And what about Facebook?

Here's an example from there:
"The arena gasped when Rory came second as we were all in shock. He was number 1 all the way. Lewis won the world championship against 1 guy as all the other cars weren't capable of winning. Rory all the way........."

Or this one:
"The skill involved in everything Rory achieved far outweighs anything Hamilton did in his prepared racing car. English audience voting for an English winner. Spoty is now and ever will be a devalued award."

Or this one:
"Good old British public showing again that it's clueless when it comes to judging true sporting prowess...he was in the fastest car for god's sake...pitiful public plebs."

I look forward to your complaint about what Facebook has become this year.

Or are opinions posted elsewhere OK and it's only if the same sentiments are expressed in this forum that you disapprove?
