I believe Kenneth Williams was even more weird in real life than he was in his on screen persona, I read he kept his toilet covered in cling film.
Mercurial and conflicted doesn't even begin to cover Williams. He could be the most charming and engaging raconteur going (some of his interviews are legendary) but then by all accounts, even to his closest friends, he could be a spiteful little shit. He had many social hang-ups not least of which was not appreciating being up staged when he wanted to be the centre of attention (which was often). He could be a pretentious intellectual one moment and doing fart jokes the next! He had a snobbish intolerance of ignorance. In private he was also a hypochondriac obssessed with cleanliness and full of self loathing traits.
All this is outlined in his extensive and fascinating diaries - one of the best such books ever published. Williams is a truly fascinating character study. Even people who knew him could like him and loath him all at the same time. So it's no wonder everyone else has trouble!
